Diamond Education

Every diamond is unique, but its quality and value are primarily evaluated through four characteristics known as the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

Understanding how these qualities work together can help you compare diamonds and select the one that best reflects your preferences and priorities.

Understanding the 4Cs

The 4Cs work together, and no single characteristic determines whether a diamond is right for you.

Some shoppers prioritize brilliance and place greater emphasis on cut. Others prefer a larger carat weight, a higher color grade or a diamond with minimal visible inclusions.

Understanding your priorities can help you find the best balance of appearance, quality and value.

Cut

Cut refers to how precisely a diamond has been shaped and faceted, not its overall outline.

The quality of the cut determines how effectively light enters the diamond, reflects within it and returns through the top. A well cut diamond can appear bright, lively and full of brilliance, while a poorly cut diamond may look darker or less vibrant.

Cut is evaluated through factors such as proportion, symmetry and polish. For round brilliant diamonds, cut grades range from Excellent to Poor.

Color

Diamond color is graded according to how little visible color is present within the stone.

The traditional diamond color scale ranges from D through Z. Diamonds graded D are considered colorless, while diamonds farther along the scale may display increasingly noticeable yellow or brown tones.

Color can appear different depending on the diamond’s shape, size and setting. The metal surrounding the stone can also influence how its color is perceived.

Clarity

Clarity refers to the natural characteristics found inside and on the surface of a diamond.

Internal characteristics are called inclusions, while external characteristics are known as blemishes. These features are evaluated under 10 times magnification according to their size, number, position and visibility.

Clarity grades range from Flawless to Included. Many inclusions are too small to be seen without magnification and may have little effect on the diamond’s appearance.

Carat Weight

Carat is a measurement of a diamond’s weight, not its visible size.

One carat equals 200 milligrams. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can appear different in size depending on their shape, proportions and how their weight is distributed.

Carat weight is only one part of a diamond’s overall beauty. A smaller diamond with an exceptional cut may appear brighter and more impressive than a larger diamond with weaker proportions.
