July Birthstone History and Meaning

The gemstone Ruby derives its name from the Latin word "ruber" meaning red - the color of love and passion. They are the most historically significant gemstones. In ancient India, they were known as the "king of precious stones" and called Ratnaraj in Sanskrit.

Traditionally, rubies were thought to protect the wearer from misfortune and ward off negative energies. Warriors in ancient Burma (now Myanmar) and China even inserted them into their battle armor as they believed that rubies protected them and made them invincible in battle.

Rubies were also highly prized in medieval Europe, symbolizing health, wealth, power, and protection from evil.

They are believed to bring energy, strength, and courage to the wearer. In many cultures, rubies are seen as a magnet for good fortune and prosperity.

July Birthstone Color

Rubies owe their rich red color to chromium and other trace elements in their crystal structure. The color range of rubies can vary from pink-red to orange-red to deep crimson, with the most prized rubies called "pigeon blood" rubies, known for their vivid, pure red hue.

The fiery red color of rubies represents deep love and intense passion. Hence, for centuries, they have been cherished as protectors of the heart and symbols of fearless love.

Wearing a ruby in July is believed to bring warmth, vitality, and a vibrant zest for life — just like the height of summer itself.

July Birthstone Durability

Ruby ranks 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, second only to diamond (10), making it exceptionally durable for everyday wear.

The July birthstone's excellent toughness and lack of cleavage (a tendency to break along certain planes) make it resistant to chipping and breaking, making it ideal for all types of jewelry including rings, which receive the most daily impact.
