Automatic watches work similarly to manual movements, but instead of manually winding the watch, kinetic energy is used to power the watch movement. As a person moves while wearing the watch on their wrist, the rotor spins and transfers energy to automatically wind the mainspring. Automatic watches, also known as self-winding movements, are favored for their ease of use. The only exception is if an automatic watch has not been worn in some time, it may require hand winding the crown to regain accurate timekeeping.

Quartz movements only require battery replacements. It's important to replace the battery quickly to avoid a battery leaking acid and damaging the quartz movement. A quartz battery can typically last up to two years before needing to be replaced.
